Over a quarter of young Americans without jobs

For all of Europe’s troubles — a left-right combination of sclerotic labor markets and austerity — the United States has quietly surpassed much of Europe in the percentage of young adults without jobs. It’s not just Europe, either. Over the last 12 years, the United States has gone from having the highest share of employed 25- to 34-year-olds among large, wealthy economies to having among the lowest.

  1. Personally, trying to enter the job market has been tough for me. I do have some things lined up, but not what I was expecting coming out of Kalamazoo College.

  2. Being a student so close to graduating, this is a little troubling. I know we talked about how much of an advantage we have coming out of K College, but I still know several unemployed K grads out there.

  3. I thought I had a few places lined up but when push came to shove, they just simply couldn't afford new hires. They all say they would like to but just cant. The future just got a whole lot more stressful, for me and all the others applying for work

  4. This is depressing. It is shocking to see how the US has changed since 2000. The figures for 2011 are alarming. 26% of the youth! That is crazy! In Spain there were protests and riots, I am wondering when we will see the same in the U.S.
Government, stop cutting we need jobs!

  5. Reading this has put a damper on my quarter. I had high hopes for positions that would be filled by capable students in a growing market, and apparently I was mistaken. Corporations can't afford new talent, and that puts a hold on my excitement for my collegiate career to be over.
