White kids will no longer be a majority in just a few years

Those projections, which include four different scenarios for population growth, estimate that today's minority ethnic groups will soon account for at least half of the under-18 population, either in 2018 or 2019.

"This is going to start from the bottom of the age distribution and move its way up," said William Frey, demographer and senior fellow for the Brookings Institution. "All of these projections show we're moving to greater diversity in the United States."

  1. I'm pretty sure my high school was something like only 55% white students so this doesn't surprise me all that much. It's nice to see the diversity growing in the U.S.

  2. I have started to witnes this change first-hand. After graduating from my high school, I have noticed that every time I go back to visit for a sporting event that there is more "color" present than when I was a student there. I feel that this article presents a very accurate perspective of what will actually be the future and how diverse our country is becoming.

  3. I am from a rural area, and my high school was largely white. The area could use a lot more diversity, especially in the schools.

  4. This isn't too surprising to me. As time has progressed there has been more intermarriage between races, producing more mixed race kids. I think it is has been and will continue to be inevitable as intermarriage continues to be more acceptable.

  5. wow America is finally evolving , this is something that I could see happening. Spanish is becoming to be a language that everyone is trying to learn because it is so present all over the U.S. It's so interesting to see the growing number of "colored" people in our nation especially in schools. I.E. at my high school and K College with their different international programs and POSSE scholarship.

  6. My high school was also predominately white when I graduated, we maybe had 5-10% who were not white, and that is being generous. After visiting my high school this past year however, I have definitely noticed a little more diversity amongst the students. I would say that now it's approximately 15-20%, which is still low but definitely a change.
