Apple picking robots

are being built in Washington State.  Check out the video here.

Why?  Because it is hard to find human labor (according to the article).

  1. This is not surprising to me. With the threat of stricter immigration policies, these low-paying, labor intensive jobs such as picking fruit will become even more difficult to fill.

  2. I agree with Zoe. This also reminds me of coffee beans picker case in Costa Rica. The locals are not willing to work to collect coffee beans, so right now most of the human labors for picking coffee beans are from Nicaragua, yet the immigration policy gets stricter in CR, it is more difficult to fill such labor intensive jobs.

  3. I find this ironic actually. Stricter immigration laws were intended to create work, and now those jobs, undesirable as they may be, are still unavailable because of robots.

    1. I agree with Chido. It's sad that immigrants are always the go-to for being the blame and the irony is definitely apparent with jobs going to robots.

  4. I guess it's always hard to find the right balance between technology and human capital. Rather than innovating just for innovation's sake, we need to create new technologies that actually improve people's lives and the societies we live in.
