Earlier this quarter, a post was made about currencies and the potential for currencies such as bit coin to take over one day.
This post in the WSJ, Why You Shouldn't Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is, talks about paper money as a mean of spreading illness and disease.
What are your thoughts about the article? Could this speed up the process of 'getting rid of' paper money in the world?

Honestly, why address the issue now when it could have been addressed earlier? It seems like basic knowledge that print money contains germs. That's why you wash your hands afterwards. I do not think that print money will stop being the currency because of the germs found on bills. The article states that in any event, money would be printed using a different substance but it will still be print money.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Shaquindra. Print money will not change because of the germs, but because of other elements such as the use of credit cards and bit coins. I think the main point here is that even if paper money has germs, we have had that knowledge for too long that people do not seem to consider that as a reason for changing, but instead they would take other methods of payment because of their convenience.
ReplyDeletei agree with the comments above. paper money has been in existence for a very long time. if there was any life threatening diseases from the 'exchange of paper money', those diseases would have come to light a while ago. i think our bodies are well-equipped to deal with germs found on bills. i don't think that due to germs, paper money will disappear. Other factors such as globalization will lead to the development of other payment methods that will easily facilitate transactions.
ReplyDeletevery interesting read. i'm surprised there wasn't that much talk about it (or maybe i didn't know) before. it is scary to think how many different species of organisms use currency notes as their habitat. i would be interested to read about actual cases that would provide a solid backup for the study.
ReplyDeleteThe fear of spreading germs through paper money is understandable but i don't think it would actually influence people to push for the change. Bitcoin currency sounds like a good idea, although the fact that the concept of electronic currency is difficult to understand, plus issues of fraud may be some of the reasons why it may not be as popular as people expect it will be.
ReplyDeleteAfter touching money and the handles at the gas station I try to wash my hands. It's interesting that something we put in our wallet and take home with us was passed through so many different hands before. This seems like it could be a good reason to convert to a non-concrete symbol of a dollar.
