I am so torn! It is wonderful that this service has created jobs, made the neighborhood safer, and provided bathroom services that wouldn't otherwise be available. It is just so sad that this innovation was necessitated by so much poverty and lack. WATER! is the scarce resource.
I agree with Chido's point that this service even though provides jobs for the community, the innovation was necessitated by poverty and the job is not unsustainable. This is very sad. We should just do some little things everything to save water.
I'm with Chido on this one. It's great that this is providing jobs, but the fact that this was done because of ridiculous poverty levels is sad. I think what's even worse, though, is the fact that the governments still hasn't chipped in to help. Even if we think of it in solely economic terms, improving sanitary conditions and providing people with the basic necessity of clean water would reduce the prevalence of diseases like cholera in the area. And those people would be better able to contribute to the productivity of the society. However, in reality would they actually be able to find jobs?
