Trump privately signs anti-planned Parenthood law.

This signing broke today but was considerably overshadowed by the dropping of the GBU-43/B MOAB in Afghanistan against ISIS. This bill will allow states to withhold federal money from organizations that provide abortions including Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood offers so much more than abortions including STD and HIV testing, LGBT services, pregnancy testing & services and even men's healthcare. Trump has been talking about defunding Planned Parenthood for a while now but this new law will certainly cause Planned Parenthood clinics to suffer in various states. This law will even affect Kalamazoo as we have the Planned Parenthood clinic on West Michigan Avenue. Additionally, many families will lose critical health care services provided by Planned Parenthood and will impact their economic security. Thoughts?

  1. To your first point about one bad policy/decision overshadowing the other. That definitely is a huge problem, because you can't really discuss and address issues that are not covered by the media, and sometimes when news does make the rounds on our "newsfeed" it's too late.
As for defunding organizations/services like Planned Parenthood, there are many underlying issues which we can talk about. In terms of inequality and economic development, I would argue that family planning and reproductive health (and justice) have a lot to do with the problem (not to mention how sexist such policy proposals are). There are many studies that show that empowering women through simple things like birth control, and control over when they have a child, along with education is one of the best things you can do for economic development. Furthermore, the receivers of services provided by Planned Parenthood are mostly from lower socioeconomic statuses...so how does defunding planned parenthood help the country in any way? I wish one of these politicians who firmly stand by such beliefs would answer that question without saying something stupid.

  2. I agree with Kriti entirely. There is definitely an issue with the stories covered by the media and the delay we experience with news stories. In regards to Trump's bill, as Kriti said those services are very critical to people of lower socioeconomic statuses. It seems as it he is really taking the power of the people away and it this case, specifically women. It makes me wonder what concern he has for the interests of the people and their beliefs.
