Growth of single parent families

In this article they discuss how the percentage of American children living with one parents has substantially grown in the past few years.

Do you think there is a connection between the growing number of single parent families and the growing poverty rate? Could it be that the growing rate of poverty leads to more single parent families, or that the more children being raised in single parent homes is leading to those children growing up and becoming impoverished themselves?

  1. It's definitely possible that in recessions there is been some relationship there, but I'm skeptical of a long term relationship. From the 60's until 2000 poverty declined somewhat consistently while the percentage of kids raised in single parent households has increased. Also in the chart you see that Turkey has both the lowest percentage of children raised in single parent households as well as the highest child poverty rate.

  2. I think there is somewhat positive relationship between the growing number of single parent families and poverty growth. Raising children has been increased by far compared to the past. For some families, it's even harder to raise a child when both parents work. It could be financially difficult to raise a child for a single parent. It all depends on an individual, but a trap of poverty from single parents could possibly be passed on their children.
