Wow. This country already leads the world in incarceration rates and our system does little to rehabilitate prisoners so they can reenter society. This is very unjust and I could see several problems of the elimination of prison visitation. I hope that this technology does not succeed in penetrating the prison industry. We need significant prison reform, but this is a step in the wrong direction.
I totally agree with this statement. Prisoners are treated like less than human beings and this is extremely unfortunate. We should have a better rehabilitation program because most people who have been in jail once will be back there again at some point in their life.
When in prison sometimes prisoners are not allowed to interact with other people and this does huge psychological damage to someone. So, not being able to see loved ones, even if human interaction is normal does a lot of damage as well. But not only is this hurting the inmates but it is hurting the families as well who want to see their loved ones in person. Video chat is not the same.
"The American prison system is massive. So massive that its estimated turnover of $74 billion eclipses the GDP of 133 nations. What is perhaps most unsettling about this fun fact is that it is the American taxpayer who foots the bill and is increasingly padding the pockets of publicly traded corporations like Corrections Corporation of America and GEO Group." from https://smartasset.com/insights/the-economics-of-the-american-prison-system
Clearly some conflicting interests in our prison system
This is so frustrating to see how one of the most developed countries in the world may be leading the world into the wrong direction. Three following facts: 1. 34% of families go into debt to cover the cost of communicating with their inmate 2. $1 per minute is the typical cost of a video visitation 3. extremely concentrated market of this industrial complex dominated by three communication companies - just show how this is for-profit system, nothing like for justice or for prisoner's human rights. And like Rachel said, considering how much psychological damage this can do on each prisoner and how negatively it will impact the prisoners reentering the society, this system needs to be abolished as soon as possible. I'm also concerned about how other countries will react to this system adopted by the US. The more countries adopting this video visitation, the more unjust there would be in the prisons all over the world.
I don't understand the purpose of this new system. I don't see how there can be any economic benefit to this, it just seems entirely cruel. I completely agree with the general consensus of the comments above, we are generally too harsh on prisoners in this country. This new system might make sense if there were some economic benefit, but i cannot see how there would be.
