These two stories illustrate two different worlds of the top 1% and the bottom 20%. I was quite shocked to read the second story because I thought those kinds of working conditions were gone and improved a long time ago. I remember reading an article about Tyson that each chicken farm has several chaplains who help workers overcome their guilty feeling from killing chicken. I thought working conditions were better, but I guess not. The first story definitely resonated with the right to privatize beach from last week's class. It was disturbing to see them fighting because of money, but at the same time, if I were one of the billionaires or the millionaires, then I'm not sure. In reality, it seems like money can do everything and tremendously influences every single part of our society.
I'm almost appalled by the second story about bathroom break. I just can't believe it's still happening in this 21st century in the first place. And it's actually happening in the United States, one of the most developed countries. I've heard of some stories about extremely awful working conditions in developing countries, but never expected that this would be happening in this nation. Bathroom break is such a basic condition to be guaranteed for any workers. Furthermore, the fact that this is not the first time this issue has been highlighted really bothers me. If it was already brought up in the Food Inc. in 2008, what have been the US government or any labor regulatory agency officials have been doing for the past 8 years? Regardless of how representative these cases are, this kind of incident just should not exist in this country anymore and this should be resolved as soon as possible.
