The Koch brothers in this week's news

Are they behind the Republican refusal to allow Obama to pick a Supreme Court justice .... his right under the Constitution (with the Senate's advice and consent)? (see link here)

Are they pushing for Paul Ryan to be the Republican nominee?  (see link here)

So....is what they are doing wrong?  Shouldn't people be politically active?  What is the problem?

  1. I don't think that there's anything wrong with people being politically active, but I think that there is serious issues that occur when the very wealthy become politically active, and use their wealth to leverage more power. As you can clearly see here, the Koch brothers are forcing their agenda upon the government simply because they have the financial capacity to do so. It's unjust that one or two people can have such a great impact on politics. Democracy cannot exist where the wealthy have such a great impact on these matters. Politicians become puppets for those willing to provide donations, and no longer work in the best interests of the American people.

  2. I agree with Mario that while all people should be politically active if they choose so, there should be some sort of limits or restrictions in place to prevent the extremely wealthy to leverage power. The fact that they can force the government to take particular actions is unjust. However, part of me wonders if many republican senators and leaders were leaning towards preventing the appointing of a new justice, and if the support from the Koch brothers just simplified their decision. Either way it is not fair to the American people that a small group of wealthy individuals can for politicians to do what they want.

  3. In terms of politicial influence, I see inequality between wealthy and poor people. Everyone has a equally one vote, but wealthy people can have more power beyond a voting right. The rich can push their ideas and wants through funding related parties. However, we cannot say that is wrong because capitalism allows to do so. It is not fair in the perspecitve of poor people, but it is also not ethical for the rich to utilize to influence their power towards politics.
