Voting rights are for suckers

From the Washington Post:  Ivanka and Eric Trump ran afoul of New York’s overly restrictive voting laws. New York does not allow
same-day registration, party primaries are open only to registered
Democrats and Republicans, and new voters must register at least 25 days
in advance in order to participate. Most absurdly, anyone registered to
vote who wanted to change their party registration to vote in Tuesday’s
primary needed to have done so by Oct. 9 of last year. This is the rule
that tripped up the unaffiliated Trumps. Six months before the primary? What purpose does that serve beyond suppressing democracy?

Donald Trump’s kids can’t vote for their dad. That’s no laughing matter. - The Washington Post

  1. I can't even offer an alternate explanation in defense. I'm so disillusioned with the entire system of representative democracy. It seems like the majority of Americans don't even realize that the presidential election comes down to super delegates

  2. I'm inclined to agree with Anthony here. The more I learn and the more we discuss it in class, the worse it sounds. The hoops you have to jump through and the complexities of the whole process border on ridiculous. Definitely could use reform in my opinion.

  3. In my opinion, if people were really concerned about voting then they will do their research. A very low percentage of Americans actually vote and I think that people just don't know much about the system. In the Trump's case, they should have known how the voting process worked and switched immediately once Donald was running.

  4. I've learned that voting might not have any influence on policy turnout and any benefits besides individual satisfaction from keeping the civic duty. This applies in big elections like presidential election, but a vote can significantly affect smaller elections like city/county elections. The democratic ideal in America seems deteriorating, but like the movie we watched last week said, participation in grassroots politics is strongly encouraged to solve the current systematic problems. I'm not so sure when would the voting process become more simplified so that everyone can participate. If more people engage politically at grassroots level, I think the process can change.
