Buy local?

  1. I think the idea of tracking the movement of dollar bills around the country is really cool. I'm wondering if the results would have been different if the data was collected using larger bills. People generally use dollar bills for small purchases, bars, restaurants, convenience stores, so it makes sense that the money would stay somewhat local. But what if they were to look at $100 bills? Would the money go farther?

  3. So much for 50 states! It looks like the research by Dirk and Chen shows an American broken up in a much different way. It is interesting to see that from the spending maps, state boards do not match much. The focus here is on "neighborhoods" and cities that are pulling in money.
A couple weeks ago I received a bill that had a Where's George stamp on it. I think it is a really cool idea and I would be interested to see where a couple of my dollars end up.

  4. For a study like this, I am actually surprised by some of the blue line which also follow state lines. It is prevalent especially in the west and the Texas-Oklahoma border (state rivalry?). It may also be that the lines are on rivers, and for some reason people don't like to cross rivers.

  5. I think information like this would be really important for marketing and positioning for companies. They can have a better idea of their market through using this and understanding the state border might not be an actual border.

  6. I think this article is interesting just to see how in some areas money stays relatively within state lines but in others it travels over a larger region.

  7. The article is particularly interesting to me, mainly because I have always been interested in how money circulates throughout the country and even the world. Seeing how relatively close money usually remains/circulates is a very intriguing idea that I have never really considered as a possibility. Also, agreeing with Jared, I believe that this information would serve well as a marketing support for many companies interested in currency circulation in a given area.

  8. This article is very stimulating because it talks about the circulation and flow of money throughout the nation. There is a lot of money out there but we need to know how to use and preserve it in order to not have financial problems arise.
