Blogs of the Future

Blogging seems to be the epitome of spreading information across the world. This article suggests that it can become like another Twitter. The creator of Blogger, Mr. Williams, seems to be working on another form of blogging called Medium.

Since we have been using blogs to record our thoughts about current events, I wanted to know what everyone thinks about blogging. Has it helped to be able to use them? What are the disadvantages of using it? Advantages?

  1. I had not heard of Medium before this article, so I set up an account and looked at it. The posts are certainly far more visually appealing than blogger. I think for a class like this though where discussion is emphasized the blog helps to keep us students engaged with each other and the news outside of class. One disadvantage I think is that it can be quite easy to forget to blog though.

  2. I think blogging is a powerful tool for knowledge from the mass to spread out and available to everyone. Medium seems to invest in its content (written by commissioned professionals) and creative tools, which will enrich the quality and aesthetic aspect of this blog platform. This makes me think of Instagram, which quickly becomes popular not only because of the network effect but also because photos are "filtered" to look nice very easily within an instant. People generally like beautiful design if designing tools are made available and simplified for all. I would be interested in seeing Medium and the like blogging platform grow.

I agree with Sanjay on the last point...

  3. I think bloggers, aside from ourselves of course, lack a degree of credibility, at least in my perspective. If I search something and come across a blog it just becomes another thing i have to fact check. I am more likely to go to twitter for news than a blog,,,

  4. I also agree with Nick, there could be issues with credibility levels. If we think about it, there are already many scandals related to credible sources in newspapers, TV, and magazines... and these are somewhat "highly" regulated forms of media. I don't see blogs being regulated about their content.

  5. Blogging is one of those things that someone was bound to come up with given the ubiquity of the internet. It's another facet through which people can communicate and share their ideas with the world. Overall I think blogs are good because have really helped us become more conscious knowledgeable about the world.

  6. I, too, have a concern about the level of credibility. I would like to see an engaged comment section where there can be an open dialogue about the posts.

  7. Blogs are a very useful tool to relay thoughts and opinions on a particular subject. However, like most people have already said, the level of credibility on those posts might hinder the effectiveness of blogging. I think that is need to regulate some of the information so that the individuals reading those posts are getting the right information.
